Solving 2-D Helmholtz equation in the rectangular, circular, and elliptical domains using neural networks

Physics-informed neural networks offered an alternate way to solve several differential equations that govern complicated physics. However, their success in predicting the acoustic field is limited by the vanishing-gradient problem that occurs when solving the Helmholtz equation. In this paper, a formulation is presented that addresses this difficulty. The problem of solving the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation with the prescribed boundary conditions is posed as an unconstrained optimization problem using trial solution method. According to this method, a trial neural network that satisfies the given boundary conditions prior to the training process is constructed using the technique of transfinite interpolation and the theory of R-functions. This ansatz is initially applied to the rectangular domain and later extended to the circular and elliptical domains. The acoustic field predicted from the proposed formulation is compared with that obtained from the two-dimensional finite element methods. Good agreement is observed in all three domains considered. Minor limitations associated with the proposed formulation and their remedies are also discussed.
Optimal Gait Families using Lagrange Multiplier Method

The robotic locomotion community is interested in optimal gaits for control. Based on the optimization criterion, however, there could be a number of possible optimal gaits. For example, the optimal gait for maximizing displacement with respect to cost is quite different from the maximum displacement optimal gait. Beyond these two general optimal gaits, we believe that the optimal gait should deal with various situations for high-resolution of motion planning, e.g., steering the robot or moving in "baby steps." As the step size or steering ratio increases or decreases, the optimal gaits will slightly vary by the geometric relationship and they will form the families of gaits. In this paper, we explored the geometrical framework across these optimal gaits having different step sizes in the family via the Lagrange multiplier method. Based on the structure, we suggest an optimal locus generator that solves all related optimal gaits in the family instead of optimizing each gait respectively. By applying the optimal locus generator to two simplified swimmers in drag-dominated environments, we verify the behavior of the optimal locus generator.
Locally Imposing Function for Generalized Constraint Neural Networks - A Study on Equality Constraints

This work is a further study on the Generalized Constraint Neural Network (GCNN) model [1], [2]. Two challenges are encountered in the study, that is, to embed any type of prior information and to select its imposing schemes. The work focuses on the second challenge and studies a new constraint imposing scheme for equality constraints. A new method called locally imposing function (LIF) is proposed to provide a local correction to the GCNN prediction function, which therefore falls within Locally Imposing Scheme (LIS). In comparison, the conventional Lagrange multiplier method is considered as Globally Imposing Scheme (GIS) because its added constraint term exhibits a global impact to its objective function. Two advantages are gained from LIS over GIS. First, LIS enables constraints to fire locally and explicitly in the domain only where they need on the prediction function. Second, constraints can be implemented within a network setting directly. We attempt to interpret several constraint methods graphically from a viewpoint of the locality principle. Numerical examples confirm the advantages of the proposed method. In solving boundary value problems with Dirichlet and Neumann constraints, the GCNN model with LIF is possible to achieve an exact satisfaction of the constraints.
Constrained Independent Component Analysis
The paper presents a novel technique of constrained independent component analysis (CICA) to introduce constraints into the classical ICA and solve the constrained optimization problem by using Lagrange multiplier methods. This paper shows that CICA can be used to order the resulted independent components in a specific manner and normalize the demixing matrix in the signal separation procedure. It can systematically eliminate the ICA's indeterminacy on permutation and dilation. The experiments demonstrate the use of CICA in ordering of independent components while providing normalized demixing processes.
